New review for Tick Tick Boom by Lisa McDonnell, and if you weren’t around over the weekend you should scroll down to catch all the reviewin’ that went on. I know, like I need to tell you that…
McDonnell, Lisa – Spring Break 2009: The Adventures of Vega and Leo
December 7, 2009Spring Break 2009: The Adventures of Vega and Leo
I do always love the random submission. Lisa sent along three comics, so expect to be seeing more from her here in the near future. She also sent along a nice little fold-out with material from her comics and some other art, a sort of primer on her work, which would be a great idea for more people to put together who are looking for a concise (and free) way to get themselves out there. One thing was immediately apparent with this comic: she has a great gift to pack a lot of material into a small comic. The actual story here is only 6 pages long, but she manages to tell the story of how these two got a free vacation on spring break, what exactly they did on said break, what gifts they came home with and how they got right with the world upon arriving. On a website full of oversimplified synopses of comic stories, that has to be one of the most oversimplified, but it’s either that or ruin this. OK fine, I’ll throw a little more out there. Highlights include Leo’s bug obsession, the giant blinking eye, the crystal skull exhibit (closed until 2010) and, of course, Lake Titicaca. School children everywhere, rejoice: it is a real place. The price tag is a mystery (going by heft alone I’d say $1), but it’s already apparent that she has a distinct voice and I look forward to seeing what else I learn from her other two comics.
Update for 12/6/09
December 6, 2009New reviews today for Zeek the Martian Geek Full Color Special #2 by Brian Cattapan (also available in the store) and Just A Man #3 by Brian John Mitchell & Andrew White. Don’t forget my offer for holiday orders from my comic store: anything ordered before 12/20 will get to you in time for Christmas and I’ll pay for any extra postage to make it happen. Why? Because I am clearly just bursting with the holiday spirit!
Update for 12/5/09
December 5, 2009New reviews for Everybody Is Stupid Except For Me by Peter Bagge (his first new collection in ages) and Salvager Kain #5 by Paul Sloboda. I should mention that Fantagraphics has tons of comics for only $.99 at their site, so if you were looking for a cheap pile of Hate, Love and Rockets or all sorts of other things, you should probably head in that general direction.
Update for 12/4/09
December 4, 2009New review for Big Plans #4 by Aron Nels Steinke, have a happy weekend everybody, I should have a few new updates to make up for lost time (barring another computer explosion).
Update for 12/3/09
December 3, 2009New review for Hard Times #10 by Ed Jackson. The computer is hanging on, so all activity around here should be back to normal. That means a regular update tomorrow and a bit of a bonanza over the weekend to make up for lost time, so if you’re one of those people who only read this to kill time at work (and, if so, I envy your ability to not have sites like this block), there should be a pile of things to come back to on Monday. I’m also taking steps to prevent this from happening again, although judging from my general luck with computers it’ll probably end up being pointless.
“Update” for 12/2/09
December 2, 2009Well, my old computer is riddled with viruses and I can’t seem to do much of anything with it, while I also seem to have lost the installation disk for my scanner so I can’t use it with my backup. If anybody out there knows how to install a Canoscan lide 50 without the installation disk, please contact me at whitey@opticalsloth.com. In the meantime, I’ll be trying to scrub my old computer down to try and get it in working order, but no updates today. If all goes well I’ll be back tomorrow…

November 17, 2009New review for Jumbly Junkery #8 by L. Nichols, and everybody got the memo yesterday about me needing new comics, right? Good…
Nichols, L. – Jumbly Junkery #7
November 17, 2009Jumbly Junkery #7
Is it possible for one person to make an anthology? I never thought so, but the sheer range of stories and artwork in this one make me wonder. The bigger pieces of past issues are gone (I think the biggest piece is 3 pages), but variety is the theme for this issue. The “normal” pieces in here include L. wondering if she’s ever going to have the one moment where she joins the sisterhood of women, drinking too much coffee, wondering what makes cats tick (and if they’re inherently good creatures), trying to pick out the things that separate people from animals while walking through a crowd, how Obama easily beats the lowered expectations left over from his predecessor, using cats like skates, whether or not it’s wrong that she loves one cat more than the other, and the thought process of a cat when it sees a box. Mixed in with these pieces are the ones where she’s branching out (and I’m not going to even try to analyze them one by one), dealing with themes such as the unreliable nature of memory, machines as the imperfect perfection of man, happiness, the language of the body, a nightmare, process, and Narcissus. The Narcissus piece was notable because she uses nothing but a collection of short lines to form the whole, it’s a deceptively simple and impressive story. All this and I almost forgot the story at the center of the comic, a color piece about a man who became paralyzed due to his fear of death and was promptly buried alive. It’s an eclectic bunch of stories, that’s for sure, and if you’ve been waiting to check out her work for some reason this one is the one to get. You’ll certainly see a wide range of her talents. And what does it say about me that of all the stories available here to sample, where she uses a wide variety of styles, I went with the cute cat page? $5
Update for 11/16/09
November 16, 2009New review today for A Really True Story by Lisa McDonnell. I should point out that the review pile is getting slim again, so if you’re looking to get some exposure for your book before this holiday season, send ’em my way! I am only rarely a total dick in my reviews, and maybe that mythical rich person who loves small press comics will see your stuff and hire you to live in their mansion and be their permanent artist.
